The Canal du Midi looks easy on paper. Flat water, no swell, no tides, a few kilometres per hour and a glass of Corbières at the next mooring. In practice, it is one of the most unforgiving inland routes in France for anyone who arrives without a proper read on air draught, lock dimensions and the VNF paperwork. Bridges are lower than most crews expect, locks are older than most crews expect, and the vignette is checked more often than most crews expect. Here is what actually matters before you cast off at Sète or Castets-en-Dorthe.

The canal in numbers you actually need

The Canal du Midi runs roughly 240 km from the Étang de Thau near Sète to Toulouse, where it joins the Canal de Garonne to complete the Canal des Deux Mers to Bordeaux. It carries around 63 locks on the Midi section alone, plus notable structures like the Fonserannes staircase at Béziers and the round lock at Agde. The published limits, on most of the route, sit around:

  • Length : about 30 m maximum.
  • Beam : about 5.5 m maximum, tighter at some older locks.
  • Draught : typically 1.40 m to 1.50 m, less in dry summers.
  • Air draught : 3.00 m at the axis of the arch on most bridges, sometimes less on the edges.

Those figures are indicative. VNF publishes updated notices every season, and the real limit is whatever your hull actually clears on the day. Air draught: the number that ends trips early

Air draught is where most first-timers get caught. The old arched stone bridges on the Midi are not flat underneath. They curve, sometimes sharply, so the clearance in the middle of the arch and the clearance a metre off centre are two different numbers. A boat measured at 2.95 m to the top of the radar arch can still catch a horn, a VHF whip or a bimini frame against the shoulder of an arch if the helm drifts off the centreline.

Before you commit to the canal:

  • Measure from the waterline to the highest fixed point on the boat, then add a safety margin for a full fuel and water load pushing the boat deeper (which makes air draught grow, not shrink).
  • List every removable item above that: aerials, wind gear, davits, spotlights, solar panels on brackets. Decide what folds, what unbolts, what stays.
  • Keep in mind that the canal level itself varies. After heavy rain, or when a bief has been topped up, you can lose ten to fifteen centimetres of clearance without warning.

Sailors bringing a masted boat across from the Med will already know that the mast has to come down at Sète or Port Camargue. Motor cruisers with a hardtop are the ones that get surprised. If you are unsure, the honest answer is to walk two or three bridges on foot before you enter the system.

The VNF vignette: how it works and how it is checked

Every pleasure boat on the French connected inland waterways needs a VNF vignette (péage de plaisance). It is issued by Voies navigables de France and is priced by boat surface (length by beam) and duration : day, week, month, holiday season, or annual. You buy it online before you go, print it or keep the PDF, and display or produce it on request.

A few things worth knowing:

  • The holiday vignette (loisir) covers the summer months and is usually the best value if you plan to stay more than a couple of weeks.
  • Charter boats and boats used commercially fall under a different regime. If you are running paid trips, that is not the vignette you want.
  • Controls happen at locks, especially around Agde, Béziers and Toulouse. Éclusiers do check.
  • The vignette does not cover ports and halts, which bill separately by night.

Locks, éclusiers and how not to lose a fender

The Midi locks are oval, a shape unique to Riquet's original design, built to resist bank collapse. They are also older than most of the boats in them, which means walls are rough, bollards are placed for barges rather than pleasure craft, and turbulence when the paddles open is more than you would expect on a modern canal.

Standard rising-lock drill on the Midi:

  1. Approach slowly, hold off outside the gates until the éclusier waves you in. VHF is not standard practice here : eye contact and hand signals are.
  2. Fenders down both sides, low. The water level will drop the boat by two to three metres in a descending lock, so your fenders need to still be doing their job at the bottom.
  3. One line forward, one aft, each tended by a crew member. Do not cleat off. Turbulence can lift or drop the boat sharply, and a cleated line can rip a deck fitting or capsize a small boat.
  4. Engine in neutral once you are secured, but ready. Some locks push the bow around hard when filling.
  5. Listen to the éclusier. They run the lock, not you.

The Fonserannes staircase at Béziers, eight chambers in a row (of which six are now used), is worth its own briefing. Crews often walk it once before transiting. Traffic is single-direction and scheduled. Expect to wait, expect an audience, and expect the boat behind you to have a skipper who does not share your idea of a safe stand-off distance.

Mooring inside a lock is one thing. Coming alongside a rough stone quay for the night, in cross wind, with a hire boat rafting up half an hour later, is another. Engine cooling, hull wear and canal-specific stress

The Midi is warm, weedy and shallow. Three things follow from that :

  • Raw-water intakes clog. Duckweed, algae and the occasional plastic bag will find your strainer. Check it daily. Carry spares of the impeller, because a dry run in canal water on a hot afternoon is the fastest way to cook a pump.
  • Coolant temperatures creep up. Long low-rpm running at 6 to 8 km/h is not what most marine diesels are optimised for. Watch the temperature trend, not just the alarm threshold.
  • Hulls take a beating. Even with careful helming, you will touch locks and quays. Gelcoat scuffs are part of the season. A boat that reads its own NMEA network is a real asset on the canal, because you get engine temperature, RPM, coolant pressure and hours logged automatically, alongside the position track. Planning the transit end to end

A realistic full transit from Sète to Toulouse takes ten to fourteen days at a comfortable pace, longer if you want to stop properly at Agde, Béziers, Homps, Carcassonne and Castelnaudary. Lock opening hours are seasonal, usually 09:00 to 19:00 with a midday closure, and shorter in shoulder season. There is no night navigation.

Practical scheduling notes:

  • Fuel points are limited. Top up at Agde, Port Cassafières, Homps, Carcassonne and Castelnaudary. Do not assume a card reader will work on a Sunday.
  • Pump-out stations are rarer than fuel points. If your holding tank is small, plan around it.
  • Bridges in villages are the tightest air-draught pinch points, not the open countryside spans.
  • Chômage : annual maintenance closures. Check VNF's calendar. A section closure with your boat on the wrong side of it will end your season.
