Every boat that has ever carried a marine head has, at some point, smelled like one. That sweet, sulphurous tang that hits you when you open the forward cabin after a week off the boat. Most owners blame the tank. Most of the time, the tank is innocent. The smell is a system problem, and it comes from four or five predictable places once you know where to sniff. Get the chemistry, the plumbing and the ventilation right and a marine head can be as neutral as the one at home. Get any of them wrong and no amount of blue liquid will save you.
Where the smell actually comes from
Marine heads produce two very different odours. The first is hydrogen sulphide, that classic rotten-egg note. It comes from anaerobic bacteria breaking down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. That happens in the tank, in low points of the discharge hose, and in the bowl trap when a boat has been sitting. The second is ammonia, a sharper, eye-watering smell that comes from urine breaking down. Ammonia usually means a ventilation problem : the tank is producing gas faster than the vent can shift it, and the gas is finding its way out through hose walls, fittings, or a dry joker valve.
A useful diagnostic habit : learn to tell the two apart. Sulphide smells mean the biology in your tank has gone anaerobic, or a hose is saturated. Ammonia means air is not moving. Sweet, faintly septic smells that come and go with heel usually point to raw sewage sitting in a low loop somewhere in the discharge run.
The hoses are almost always guilty
Sanitation hose is the single biggest source of persistent head smell on boats over about eight years old. Every hose is permeable to some degree, and cheap PVC hose can start venting through its walls after two or three seasons. There is a simple field test that works reliably : take a hot damp cloth, wrap it around a section of discharge hose for thirty seconds, then smell the cloth. If it stinks, the hose is done. Do this test at several points, especially at the lowest sections of the run and near the tank inlet.
When you replace, buy real sanitation hose. It is expensive per metre and it is worth every euro. Look for hoses rated specifically for holding tank service, ideally with a smooth interior bore to prevent buildup and a butyl or nitrile inner layer. While you are in there :
- Shorten the run wherever you can. Every metre of hose is a metre of potential smell surface and a metre where waste can sit.
- Eliminate low loops. Sewage sitting in a U-shaped sag will breed anaerobic bacteria fast, and the smell will pulse every time the boat heels onto the other tack.
- Double-clamp every joint with proper marine hose clamps, and inspect them annually for crevice corrosion.
- Replace the joker valve at the pump on schedule. On most manual heads this is an annual job, and a tired joker valve lets tank gas back into the bowl.
Sanitation hose replacement is not glamorous, but it belongs on the same list as impellers and anodes when you plan the maintenance of your boat before a long cruise. Discovering that your hose has gone permeable three days into a two-week charter is a special kind of misery.
Flushing water and what lives in it
Raw seawater flush is convenient and free, but it is the origin story for most sulphide smells. Seawater carries plankton, organic matter, and sulphate-reducing bacteria. Pump it into your bowl, leave it in the hose overnight, and by morning it has become a microbial reactor. The bowl fills with a black film, the hose walls coat over, and the smell begins.
There are three practical countermeasures :
- Flush thoroughly on the last use before leaving the boat. Pump enough clear water through to fully clear the discharge hose into the tank. Not two strokes. Twenty or thirty.
- Consider a freshwater flush conversion. On most manual and electric heads, you can plumb the flush inlet to a pressurised freshwater line via a vacuum breaker. Freshwater lacks the sulphate that feeds the smelly bacteria. You will use fresh water, but the trade-off is usually worth it for a boat lived on regularly.
- Use vegetable oil, not bleach, for storage. A tablespoon of mineral or vegetable oil pumped into the bowl before you leave coats the joker valve and keeps it supple. Bleach attacks rubber seals and shortens joker valve life.
Tank chemistry and venting
The holding tank itself should not smell if two conditions are met : the tank stays aerobic, and the vent line is clear. Aerobic bacteria are largely odourless. Anaerobic bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide. The difference is oxygen, and oxygen gets into the tank through the vent.
The vent line is the single most neglected component in the entire sanitation system. On a lot of production boats it is a 16 mm hose running to a mushroom fitting on the topsides, and after a few years it is partly blocked by dried salts, spider webs, or an overzealous overfill that pushed slurry up the vent. A blocked vent has two consequences : the tank goes anaerobic and starts to smell, and the pump-out becomes painfully slow because you are trying to pull a vacuum against a sealed vessel.
Check your vent every season. Disconnect it at the tank, blow through it with a foot pump or shop vac, and look at the exterior fitting for salt buildup or insect nests. If yours is undersized, upgrading to a 19 mm or 25 mm vent is one of the highest-impact jobs you can do on a smelly boat. Some owners fit an inline vent filter with activated charcoal, which works well provided you replace the cartridge annually and keep it above the waterline in all heel angles.
On the additive question : the market is full of blue, green and pink liquids that promise miracles. The honest summary is that biological (enzyme-based) treatments work with your tank chemistry, while formaldehyde-based chemicals work against it by killing everything. The chemical route creates a sterile tank that smells fine until you pump out, at which point the marina staff will not thank you. Enzyme treatments, combined with a well-vented tank and disciplined flushing, are the sustainable answer.
Winter layup and long absences
A head that sits full of stagnant water for four months in a cold shed will greet you in April with the worst smell of its life. Winterisation of the sanitation system deserves the same attention you give the engine or the freshwater side. The routine :
- Pump out the tank completely at a proper pump-out station. Then add ten to twenty litres of fresh water and pump that out too, to rinse.
- Flush the head with fresh water until the discharge runs clear. Then pump antifreeze (the non-toxic pink propylene glycol type, never automotive ethylene glycol) through the intake until it comes out the discharge.
- Leave a small amount of antifreeze in the bowl to protect the joker valve and inlet seals from freezing.
- Close the seacocks. Label them if you have crew who might open them without thinking in spring.
Sanitation is one part of a broader winter problem. Damp air, stagnant water and closed lockers all conspire against a boat left alone. A damp, closed boat with a stagnant tank will smell three times worse than a ventilated boat with the same tank.
Diagnosing the smell that will not go away
If you have replaced hoses, cleared the vent, swapped the joker valve and the smell is still there, work through this list methodically :
- Check the tank itself for pinhole leaks. Polyethylene tanks can crack at the fitting bosses, particularly if they were overtightened. Wipe the outside of the tank with a clean white cloth and look for staining.
- Look for a bowl that is not sealing. A tired bowl-to-base gasket will let gas seep out at deck level. The fix is a five-euro gasket and thirty minutes of work.
- Sniff the bilge under the tank. Old spills that dried into carpet, sound insulation, or unpainted plywood will keep smelling until you remove them. Sometimes this means replacing the sole panels or the tank platform entirely.
- Check for gelcoat contamination. If sewage has soaked into a bare fibreglass surface for years, the resin itself starts to hold the smell. Sealing the affected area with epoxy usually cures it. A refresher on fibreglass boat maintenance helps here.
- Verify the anti-siphon loop. If your head is below the waterline and the discharge does not include a properly vented loop, seawater can back up into the bowl and stagnate. The vent hole in the loop must be clear, and the small duckbill (if fitted) has to be replaced periodically.
None of this is exotic work. It is patient plumbing, and it rewards the owner who does it once, does it properly, and writes down what was replaced and when.
